According to Lilly Ajarova, the Executive Director of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), Uganda will be making deliberate efforts to interest her young population in local tourism.
“We have a special program for the children,” she said. “We are providing education, you know, tourism related education to the children.” She said that UTB is actually sponsoring this venture and would like to showcase a wider scope of the country’s tourism strengths. To do this, she says they are printing books about the animals, the different animals in Uganda including the Chimpanzees and the destinations where they are found.
“… and that is going to be able to you know, get the children interested,” she says before talking how they will get the work done. “We are working in partnership with Uganda Life Education Center to be able to sponsor school groups to visit not only the zoo in Entebbe, but also visit different places.” This approach Ajarova says, is because they believe that the children are the visitors and or tourists of tomorrow.
She quickly adds that quite often, children influence where their family chooses to holiday. She says thus: “And also not only that, children many times also influence the decision of the parents on where they have to go for holidays.” Ajarova who spoke during the just concluded Ekyooto event that looks to showcase Uganda’s cuisines to the world.
